Male Pattern Baldness
- What is the cause?
- When the hormone testosterone meets with the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, it is converted into dihydrotestosterone or DHT. This resulting hormone causes a change in the internal structure of "genetically predisposed" hair follicles, leading to shedding and eventual baldness.
Hair follicles that are sensitive to DHT are typically located in the crown area, the temple recessions, and-in the cases of advanced baldness-the top of the head. Hair follicles at the back of the head and sides are the least susceptible to the effects of DHT and therefore last a lifetime.
- What factors do not contribute to male pattern baldness?
- Contrary to common thought, male pattern baldness is not caused by hats, blow-drying or chemicals such as perms and hair color. Research also shows that clogged sebaceous glands, diet, and poor blood flow to the top of the scalp play no role in the condition.
