Hair Sciences Center of Colorado - FAQs
Talk with Dr. Harris
- What can I expect the day of the procedure?
- Expect care that is not only surgically excellent, but also highly personalized. We'll do everything possible to ensure your comfort. You'll relax with a foot massage prior to the procedure, nap as the transplantation is performed, eat a catered lunch, and read a book or watch a DVD in the afternoon.
- Is the procedure painful?
- We use every technique available to ensure the most painless - if not pain-free - experience. Most patients nap during the procedure. Any discomfort they feel after the procedure is usually temporary, lasting two or three days at most. Patients describe their post-operation discomfort level as minimal, or sometimes moderate. It is unusual to have significant discomfort. Patients may choose to take ibuprofen or a mild narcotic for pain relief during the post-operative period.
- When will the redness on my scalp completely disappear?
- The transplanted area may look pink - like a sunburn - for seven to 10 days after the surgery. Patients with skin that is prone to redness may notice a slight pinkness somewhat longer. An assessment of this tendency is performed at the consultation.
- How long is the "dormant" period between surgery and when the new hair begins to grow? When can I expect to see substantial results?
- Typically, hair begins to grow between the second and third months. However, it doesn't all grow at once, and you will notice that each hair has its own timetable. About 20 percent of the hair grows between the second and fourth months, with about 60 to 70 percent growing between the fifth and eighth months. The final stage of growth may occur as late at month 10.
- I currently wear a hairpiece. What can I do with my hairpiece after my surgery, but before my hair grows in?
- Most patients can go back to wearing their hairpiece within three days of surgery. You may have to change the way you attach the unit, and we will discuss this with you at the consultation. We also will be happy to assist you with different styling methods and scalp-coloring solutions that may help make this time of transition easier for you.
